The Sheriffmuir Doublet is a traditional piece of formal wear, worn with a kilt, sporting a high collar and decorative buttons. It is usually worn with a matching waistcoat. That can have a lower neckline with five buttons, or higher with six - see some of the photographs for the difference. 

The Sheriffmuir was especially popular in the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods, then revived in the middle of the twentieth century. In the revival period it was worn with a large lace jabot, although nowadays it is increasingly worn with a necktie or rouche tie under the waistcoat. The Sheriffmuir can also take a shoulder plaid under the epaulette for even more formal occasions.  

The name Sheriffmuir refers to the inconclusive and protracted battle in 1715 between the Jacobites under the Earl of Mar, and the Government forces under the Duke of Argyll. 

  • Choose from our stock of 19oz Baratheas, Tweeds or Velvets.
  • Fine lining chosen to match the fabric, or you can opt for a black thistle jacquard lining. If you have something else specific in mind, just leave us a note. 
  • Your choice of epaulette style, or none at all. 
  • Cuff options. A gauntlet is traditional, but other options are available for your own tastes. 
  • Choice of Buttons. Metal is traditional, but take your pick to suit your own style! 
  • Matching five or six button waistcoat
