A tartan fly plaid is a traditional and elegant kilt outfit accessory for the most formal occasions. It is a large piece of fabric made from matching tartan, designed to complement the kilt as part of formal Highland dress. Worn draped gracefully over the shoulder—typically the left—it is weighted in place with a large, ornate brooch, often of Celtic or clan design - be sure to explore those elsewhere on the website.

The origins of the fly plaid can be traced back to the historic féileadh mór, or Great Kilt, a voluminous garment that wrapped around the body and included a large upper portion used as a cloak. As Highland dress evolved, this upper section was gradually separated, giving rise to the fly plaid as a standalone accessory. Today, it serves both a decorative and ceremonial function, adding a touch of grandeur and tradition to formal outfits.

Fly plaids are commonly worn on special occasions, such as weddings. One recent tradition is for the groom to wear the flyplaid while walking up the aisle, then during the ceremony will take it off and drape it over their partner, symbolically welcoming them to his clan.

Wearing a fly plaid is a timeless way to honour Scottish heritage while embracing the elegance and symbolism of Highland culture.
