This brooch is inspired by one of the mysterious silver Pictish penannular brooches discovered as part of a Viking hoard in Rogart, Sutherland, in the far north of Scotland. The style of brooch dates to sometime in the eighth century and it was discovered in 1868 by workmen building a railway. Most of the hoard has been lost since. The original from which this was inspired is now kept in the National Museum of Scotland.
