This basket-hilted sword kilt pin is case in solid pewter and finished in antique silver.

This type of sword was the descendant of the famous and larger Claymore. While the rest of Europe developed nimble sabres and duelling swords, the Scots favoured a heavier battle sword. So this retailed the old style of solid blade, while adopting a large basket hilt to protect the wearers hand. Even so, this was called the claidheamh beag, or 'Claybeg' (meaning small sword) as it was a single-hand weapon. It was usually accompanied by the targe, a small round shield. This sword was especially prominent among the Highlanders who fought in the Jacobite Rebellions. It was later adopted by the officers in Scottish Regiments in the British army and is an iconic piece of design.

Premium quality hand finished pewter kilt pin, plated in antique silver. The kilt pin is worn on the front of a kilt to prevent it lifting, although this can equally be worn as a large statement brooch in its own right. Cast and finished at our workshop in Glasgow, Scotland, by our highly trained craftsmen.

Size 9.5cm long.

Be sure to check out the other kilt pins in our Swords of Scotland range, which features several famous blades from Scottish History.
