Available Options

Machine-washable, hypoallergenic and vegan-friendly Polyviscose Great Kilt with optional accessories. This is 11oz lighter weight material, which is perfect for when you want the look of a great kilt but is also an excellent alternative to wool.

(The wool version is pictured here to give an impression) Please note that the polyviscose tartans can sometimes have a smaller set size than their wool counterparts, so we would advise that you consider purchasing a swatch before going ahead with your order.

The Great Kilt was a near universal garment in the Highlands from the sixteenth century to the early part of the eighteenth (when the modern small kilt, the feileadh beag, was developed). Traditionally, the Great Kilt was simply a large piece of cloth, held together with a belt and folded in precise ways.

Can be supplied with a large plaid brooch - choose from the drop-down menu. These brooches have large brass pins to ensure they hold fast. Stone colour options include Ruby Red, Amethyst Purple, Emerald Green, Sapphire Blue, Jet Black and Topaz Yellow.

We're not yet able to make vegan leather belts, so please note that the optional belts supplied here are real leather.

The Great Kilt can be made with 'cheater pleats' for you (as seen in the pictures above), although it can be left un-pleated if you like. The apron edge is fringed and belt loops are set at the appropriate length for your height. Again, these can be left off if you prefer - just leave a note.

As with all our kilts, this garment is Made in Scotland by our own trained kilt makers. Each great kilt can take up to SIX weeks to dispatch.

Tartan Finder Disclaimer:

As each of the mills has supplied their own images, or they have been taken from fabric samples, please note that the setts are not to scale when comparing tartans of different mills. Also, as screen resolutions vary, colours may differ slightly from those seen here. If unsure, we’d encourage you to purchase a swatch of the fabric before buying.

Measuring advice:

  • Waist: measure firmly around waist at navel height. This helps us to position the aprons and belt loops.
  • Seat: measure around the largest part of the seat area. This helps us to know how wide to make the kilt cloth.
  • Kilt Length: measure from the top of the hip at navel height (so the measure curves over the top of the hip bone) to the top or middle of the knee. As a rule of thumb, your kilt length should be no shorter than a third of your height. It's always best to get someone to help with this measurement, as you'll lean forward and shorten the length when doing it yourself. This measurement helps us to position the belt loops and pleats (if required)
  • Height: provide this in feet and inches. This lets us check whether the kilt length looks in proportion.
